Shana K. Carpenter, Ph.D.

Dr. Shana Carpenter (she/her) is a Professor at Oregon State University near Portland, Oregon. She specializes in research on spacing, transfer of learning, and the use of pre-questions for retrieval practice. She earned her Ph.D. from Colorado State University in 2004.

Dr. Carpenter has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, and in book chapters highlighting specific strategies that teachers and students can use in their classes to promote learning. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and by the James S. McDonnell Foundation, and has been featured in a number of books, along with the Washington Post, Forbes, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Futurity, and Iowa Public Radio.

Dr. Carpenter teaches courses in Memory, Learning, and Research Methods. She gives talks and interviews on the science of learning, both in the U.S. and internationally, and serves as a consultant who facilitates professional development workshops.
